About the role
Manifesto Author, DigitalASO / OSANumériques is an integral part of ArtsPond’s knowledge management team, which includes Knowledge Seekers, Knowledge Steward, Equity Lead, and Indigenous Lead. In collaboration with Executive Leads and Knowledge Steward, the incumbent is responsible for authoring a national manifesto which reflects the diverse digital transformation stories, needs, values, and experiences of Canada’s arts, cultural, and creative industries. Drawing upon the results of human-centered design research undertaken in previous stages, the Manifesto Author is responsible for writing and editing accessible content in both English and French. With a focus on the perspectives of equity-seeking groups, the position plays a central role in the delivery of respectful knowledge-sharing resources as ArtsPond strives to develop inclusive practices that boost social, spatial, economic, digital, and accessibility justice in Canadian arts and culture.
Incubated by ArtsPond, the goals of DigitalASO are to help foster a national innovation ecosystem for shared digital transformation of Canadian arts, culture, and arts services in response to collectively identified systemic issues. Featuring strategic alliance-, literacy-, and platform-building actions with regional and national stakeholders onsite and online, this transformative cooperative governance effort seeks to identify and strengthen regional advantages, national champions, cross-disciplinary institutions, shared digital resources and human-cloud infrastructure to help collectively bolster digital justice for all.
In 2021, DigitalASO’s planned activities rooted in human-centered design include the cooperative publication of a digital transformation manifesto, co-design of an open source ecosystem mapping and matchmaking digital tool, and the scoping of a national alliance to help sustain access and inclusion for equity-seeking groups from the arts, cultural, and creative industries in the digital world.
- Strengthen Ecology: Help strengthen regional and national ecosystems with humility and respect for the multi-dimensionality of difference, including beliefs, values, needs, and experience
- Amplify impact: Illustrate and amplify the capacity of the arts to lead positive social change through honest and truthful dialogues led by impacted equity-seeking groups
- Innovate Process: Cultivate and share the evolution of innovative wise practices by ArtsPond and the wider arts and culture industry through a deep commitment to experimentation and evidence-based learning.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Review and become knowledgeable about prior ArtsPond and DigitalASO activities, events, research and evaluation methods, approaches to documentation, and impact practice findings
- In collaboration with the Equity Lead and Indigenous Lead, develop a thematic, semantic, and semiotic approach for the manifesto that reflects the diversity of digital transformation needs and perspectives of Indigenous, Black, 2SLGBTQ+, people with disabilities, New Canadians, women, youth, rural/remote communities, gig workers, small to mid-sized enterprises, and other equity-seeking groups
- In collaboration with Executive Leads and Knowledge Steward, develop a structural approach for the digital transformation manifesto and organize supporting content prior to writing
Writing: First Draft (30%)
- Produce first draft of the manifesto in English (desired May 15, 2021)
- Incorporate results of human-centered design research from prior stages, including text-based minutes, audio and graphic recordings, and thematic qualitative analysis of regional and national roundtables held between Spring and Fall 2020
Writing: Second Draft (30%)
- Produce second draft of the manifesto in both English and French (desired July 31, 2021)
- Incorporate feedback from first draft and include results taken from new human-centered design, action, and applied research including literature reviews, surveys, and focus groups to be undertaken between April and July 2021
- Support the graphic and layout designer to design a preview edition of the second draft as a creative commons e-publication including text and visual imagery
- Edit and complete final draft of the manifesto in both English and French (desired September 1, 2021)
- Support the layout designer to complete design and release of the final creative commons e-publication by September 30, 2021
- Support language translators to create accessible executive summaries or highlights of core content in popular Indigenous languages such as Inuktitut, Cree, and Ojibwe.
The ideal candidate(s) will be:
- A confident writer, with a strong track record of authoring and publishing accessible non-fiction research, educational toolkits, or knowledge sharing
- Comfortable summarizing a range of knowledge research techniques (including desk-based literature reviews, horizon scanning, action or applied research, human-centered experiments, etc.)
- Good organizational and prioritization skills
- Creative and interested in ideas and digital innovation
- A natural collaborator, self-starter attitude, able to adapt and learn new skills quickly, with a history of working alongside different stakeholders to deliver projects
- Familiarity with or a passion for arts and culture in Canada
- Advanced reading and writing communications skills in English and French
- High level of familiarity with computer programs, especially Microsoft Office365
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude toward achieving goals, including excellent inter-personal communication and attention to detail
- Access to a home office including personal computer (Windows or Mac OS) and internet.
This is a flexible, part-time, freelance contract from April to September 2021. Compensation is maximum $6,500 flat fee. The position remains open until filled.
