Their visions of care share a grounded urgency, shaped by what they have carried for so long and what they know still needs to change. They are imagining pathways to caring futures that feel practical and possible, even in the middle of ongoing uncertainty. During their fellowship journeys, many of the Fellows spoke about how meaningful it was simply to gather with others who reflected their lived experience, describing the space as one where “I did not have to translate myself before speaking.” The trust they nurtured with each other in a very short period of time was inspiring, and, yes, downright infectious. We just had to learn how to move through it,” a sentiment that echoed throughout the cohort. These ongoing realities influence people’s health, safety, income, and access to community, and they shaped every part of the stories, insights, and care practices shared with us. Their reflections made clear that any planning for future crises must acknowledge the continuing nature of this crisis.

Alongside these ongoing pandemic realities, many Fellows also spoke about how the wider global context is shaping their sense of safety and care today. Wars, rising authoritarianism, climate disasters, and economic instability have created a backdrop of collective anxiety that makes every crisis feel heavier and more interconnected. In one session, a Fellow noted that “the world feels like it is on fire in more ways than one,” capturing how global conflict and upheaval now sit beside pandemic recovery. These overlapping pressures deepen the risks faced by communities already pushed to the margins and remind us that future preparedness must consider not only public health, but the cascading impacts of a world in prolonged crisis.

A generous body of creative work

Art can be one of the strongest tools for care.

— Fellow, I Love My Gig Ontario 2025

We asked each Fellow to create a personal project of about 1,800 to 2,500 words or an equivalent mix of images, audio, or video. One Fellow reflected that even noticing certain crises “feels like a luxury” when survival needs are overwhelming.

The weight carried by creative caregivers

A lot of us are caring for others while barely holding ourselves together.

— Fellow, I Love My Gig Ontario 2025

I also saw how much our care systems rely on people who are driven but tired and increasingly worn out. Many Fellows are creative caregivers, educators, parents, and frontline helpers. They are already doing so much to support themselves and others through the ongoing pressures of the pandemic and the wider cracks in our social systems. It is hard to carry that survival work while also trying to push for the kind of systems change that would help communities thrive. Their stories reminded us that future preparedness has to include real support for the people who hold so much together.

Suggestions we can act on

Group chats and care are small, but they kept us going.

— Fellow, I Love My Gig Ontario 2025

First, we can help people lean on each other more by making community engaged approaches to mutual aid easier to build and sustain on a local to global scale. This includes strengthening access to care circles before the next crisis, improving simple communication tools, and creating small emergency supports that are easy to access. I was moved by the power of Fellows’ visions for small relational networks. Simple systems like group chats, pods, and peer circles helped people stay grounded and connected when formal structures fell short. These networks may seem small, but they make a huge difference in a crisis.

Volunteerism as a care pratice

Volunteering should lift a community, not drain the people who show up to help.

— Fellow, I Love My Gig Ontario 2025

Second, I was also moved by the reflections shared about volunteerism and the role it plays in community care. Several Fellows talked about how often people want to offer their time yet feel stretched thin, uncertain about expectations, or unsure if their efforts will truly make a difference. Their insights highlighted the need for volunteer systems that honour limits, offer clarity, and make participation feel sustainable instead of draining. As one Fellow shared, “People are willing to give their time, but they need to know it will matter and that they will not be carrying the whole weight alone.” This guidance encourages us to shape future programs in ways that respect capacity and build systems that support everyone involved.

Rethinking cultural spaces for safety and access

Access is not extra. It is the foundation.

— Fellow, I Love My Gig Ontario 2025

Third, the Fellows also encouraged us to rethink cultural spaces as places where safety and access come first, with better ventilation, mask friendly options, clear safety practices, ASL or LSQ and captioning, hybrid participation, flexible illness policies, slowness, and disability justice at the center. And they reminded us to follow the leadership of Immunocompromised, Mad, Disabled, Deaf, and other marginalized communities as we plan future programs. One participant noted that predictable mask-friendly hours in cultural spaces “would make the difference between staying home or showing up.”

Care is personal and structural at the same time

Care fails when systems fail.

— Fellow, I Love My Gig Ontario 2025

The Fellows also pointed to the bigger structural issues woven through their experiences, including racism, colonial systems, housing precarity, mental health access, and the unstable reality of gig work. Their projects show that care is personal and structural at the same time, and that good planning has to address both layers. One person said quietly in a meeting, “It is hard to care for yourself when the structures around you keep shaking,” which reflected a shared truth across the group. Many participants described navigating gaps in services while still supporting others, reminding us how deeply personal resilience is tied to the systems we build together.

Creative and embodied pathways to resilience

Nature has been my witness.

— Fellow, I Love My Gig Ontario 2025

Many Fellows also discussed leaning on creative work and grounding practices such as somatics, movement, storytelling, spiritual, and land based practices as pathways to care. These helped them regulate, recover, and imagine futures that feel more embodied and livable. In one gathering, someone reflected that “the body remembers what the mind tries to forget,” a reminder of how creative and physical practices can hold what words cannot. Across the cohort, people described these practices as anchors that helped them reconnect with themselves and feel a sense of possibility again.

Closing reflections

Overall, each of their projects offers honest guidance for what resilient care can look like. I am grateful for their clarity, generosity, and trust in sharing this work with us. As one Fellow said during a meeting, “What we build together will outlast what tried to break us.” That spirit stayed with me as I moved through their work. Their projects show that caring futures are not abstract. They are already being created in everyday acts of courage, creativity, and connection.

I hope these projects will help you spark new conversations about creative resilience and care in a pandemic-infused world.
